Obituary:
A Good Man Gone to His Reward 5 Apr 1906, Henderson Gold Leaf, Henderson, NC
Rev. Chesley Coghill died at his home near Gillburg Sunday night about 9 o'clock. He had been in feeble health a long time but his immediate sickness was only about 3 weeks duration. A good man has gone to his reward. Many there are who have been blessed by the influence and example of “Uncle Chesley” Coghill. His life, humble though it was, was a blessing and benediction to those about him. He was a Godly man, zealous in good works, earnest in prayer, fervent in spirit, Mr. Coghill was a member of the Baptist church at the Harriet Cotton Mills and was a deacon of the church. He had no regular charge but preached as opportunity presented itself, and wherever the Lord's work was being done he delighted to assist and testify for his Master.
The funeral was held at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at the residence. Rev. O. M. Marshall, his pastor conducted the service assisted by Rev. G. W. Holmes of Kittrell, and Rev. J. D. Larkins of Henderson. Mr. Holmes and Mr. Larkins paid warm and affectionate tribute to the aged servant of God, as did Mr. S. R. Harris,Mr W. B. Daniel and Mr. Benjamin Smith. It was better to have been worthy of the eulogies of the men than to have reigned a king. And the subject of their remarks was. Of him it may be truly be said “Well done, good and faithful servant” of the most high King.

The Biblical Recorder (Raleigh, North Carolina) 17 Sep 1884 From Vance and Nash Counties - Dear Recorder: I have been busily engaged in revival meetings during the past month, with my churches, all of which were seasons of rejoicing with the brethren and sisters, and the awakening and conversion of sinners.
At New Bethel in Vance county, the meeting lasted 7 days, resulting in 17 professions with 4 addition to the church and others to follow. Brother Sledge and R. C. Coghill aided me. The latter comes to us from Methodists, with whom he was recognized as a local preacher. At Ephesus in Nash county there were 11 professions, 8 of whom I baptized into the fellowship of the church. Brethren Sledge and Coghill aided me. …

Henderson Gold Leaf 16 May 1889 Gill City – MR. EDITOR: - When you take an evening ride again, you should start out on the Louisburg road. About five and half miles south of Henderson, you will find yourself at Gill City, (N. C.) This is a new name for this place. The old name is Hawkins X Roads. This will probably be the first depot on – leading from Henderson to-.The people around Gill City can boast of its healthfulness and the best water in Vance county. Good springs can be found on every plantation; and two I can mention you can´t stop their flow by dipping out with a two gallon bucket. The vicinity around here is probably the thickest settled in Vance county. Among of our best farmers are: R. S. Watkins, Willie Ellis, Robert Ellis, W. T. Weir, G. M. Stainback, R. C. Coghill, Willie Kittrell and J.A. Gill who has a large plantation with a number of good renters. R. C. Coghill and W. T. Weir use no commercial fertilizers, and I can testify to the fact that they are more successful then there neighbors who use fertilizers.Leaves from the woods and pine fields, mold and muck hauled out on the land tell their own story.A good crop of wheat, no doubt, will be harvested this year in this neighborhood, and to say the least of us- we are growing populous and prosperous. …
